South Africa Trip

SCMMEF board members, approximately ten days before the COVID-19 virus began to spread in the United States, joined a delegation to Johannesburg, South Africa. This was a tremendous opportunity to visit first-hand many historical sites such as the Nelson Mandela Foundation and Museum, Nelson and Winnie Mandela’s home in Soweto, and the Apartheid Museum. The highlight of the visit was a meeting and lunch with an entrepreneur  providing vegetable relish for import and export. The revenue helps with developing their community, including their Muslim school.

The board members of their school and community organization have a shared history of the “Do For Self” endeavours with those  under the leadership of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad in the United States. We had a vitally important meeting regarding the transformative curriculum of the Clara Muhammad Schools with Sister Sa’eeda, coordinator of an after school program in Capetown; moreover,  we visited and met with coordinators of the educational programs sponsored by the Turkish community. We returned to America on March 13,  just hours before the United States government closed the borders because of the virus.
